Arica - Where the Sun Always Shines

Arica, also known as the city of eternal spring, is a city of contrasts. It is the place where the Pacific Ocean meets the wide desert, and where the Morro, the local landmark mountain, sits impressively above the city. Arica enjoys a privileged climate throughout the year, making it a beautiful destination to visit all year round.

Arica’s beaches invite you to try all kinds of watersports, with surfing being the most important one. Every year, the city celebrates the Surfing World Championships, where the best sportsmen arrive in Arica to ride the famous wave “El Gringo”.

When in the city, you can visit the beautiful historical center with the unique former customs building, the cathedral of San Marcos and the Mercado Central (central market). Another place to visit is the lush Azapa Valley and the Archaeological Museum of San Miguel de Azapa, home to the oldest mummies in the world.

Strongly influenced by the Peruvian and Bolivian people, this region represents a multicultural history. This heritage is reflected in the gastronomy and traditions of the locals.

A mixture of coastline, desert and highland, Arica has many different panoramas to offer.

The local cuisine is something you should not miss out on. The fusion of tastes reflects the diversity of Arica’s streets. For example, try the classic bread with olives from the Azapa Valley, which will give you all the energy you need for a day of adventures.

La Fuerza del Sol, the biggest Carnival of Chile

For three days, the city of Arica turns in to a place of celebration. Being one of the most important Carnivals of South America, these festivities focus on Andean and Altiplano dances and involve descendants of Afro-American communities as well as people from the interior region of Arica and Parinacota. The Carnival is celebrated in January or February and expects about 100 thousand visitors yearly.
