Enquelga - Place of Ashes

This Altiplano village belongs to the community of Colchane and is located directly in the National Park Volcano Isluga (3.850m above sea level) in the region of Tarapacá. It consists of 90 houses that are arranged around a green wetland. As a traditional Andean community, it maintains the approach of cooperative work and land ownership. It is estimated that Enquelga dates back to 1850.

The main attraction of the village are the picturesque church as well as the hot springs, which offer a great spot to enjoy a picnic. Activities in Enquelga are concentrated around agricultura (potatoes and quinoa), livestock of lamas and alpacas, fabric manufacturing and tourism.

A tundra climate keeps temperatures low, at a range between -5° and 23°C. Despite the desertic environment, there is rainfall in summer due to the Bolivian Winter.
