Geoglyph “La Tropilla” - Figures and Magic Made of Stone

“La Tropilla” is a beautiful arrangement of stone images located in the area of Cerro Sombrero. Probably they are one of the easiest to reach. The geoglyphs show a group of lamas and anthropomorphic figures. The lamas are guided by two characters, which are said to represent spirits leading the caravan to the coast.

The direction of the wandering group of lamas towards the coast is an indication of the ancient trade routes. Also, around Cerro Sombrero large amounts of llama guano have been found – another proof for the theory that the valley served as a route between the coast and the rest of the Inca Empire and the Altiplano. The pictures below show some of the lamas and a figure which represents a sacrifice.

Picture 1

The stony flanks of the Cerro Sombrero were used for La Tropilla, clearing the surrounding of stones and mounting the collected pieces to form pictures and images. The light soil of the hill contrasts with the dark stones.

Picture 2

This picture shows the “sacrificer” and some lamas accompanying him. The picture was taken with a telephoto lens from the road, showing distinctly the used technique.
