In the Pampa of Tamarugal, region of Tarapacá, you can find the capital of the community of Huara. The name means “star” in Aymara. Huara is the civic center of the area and provides basic services like a police station, medical assistance or a pharmacy.
The village was constructed after the end of the Pacific War, when it served as the administrative base of the saltpeter industry. Among the touristic points of interest are the old train station, the museum “Botica de Huara” and the Atacama Giant, a pre-Hispanic anthropomorphic geoglyph that measures 115m of height.
Huara is characterized by a desert climate, meaning extreme aridity and sparse vegetation. Precipitations do not exceed 2mm per year and are concentrated around summer month, season that is also known as the “Altiplanic winter”.
