In Aymara “murmuring water”.
Located in the Altiplano about 145km from Arica lies the village of Putre. With its numerous buildings dating back to the 17th century, for example the picturesque church, this place will make you feel like you have traveled back in time.
This Andean village contains various elements from colonial times. You can see it reflected in the doors and window sills, which were built in the 17th century. On the surrounding hills, the farmers plant alfalfa for their lamas, sheep and cattle on stone terraces that are even older.
Within the 15. Region of Arica and Parinacota, Putre is an ideal place to get used to the altitude before visiting the National Park Lauca. As the village lies at about 3.500m above sea level, it experiences strong changes in temperature. During the day it can get quite hot, up to 30°C, while during the night temperatures can drop below 0°C.
Putre is located right at the feet of the two volcanos Taapaca and Ancoma. The old stone buildings, the carefully plastered streets and the gates made of forged iron are all relics of the colonial epoch. Among the most interesting places of the village are the church from the 17th century, the main square in the village center and the magnificent views over the agricultural terraces that surround the houses.
As every village in the Altiplano, Putre celebrates Carnival festivities. The most important celebration takes place on February. On August 15th there is a tribute to the Virgen del Carmen, and in November to the procession of Cristo Rey.
