In the community of General Lagos, about 4 hours northeast from Putre, you can find the colored mountain Suriplaza. It is a beautiful example of the pristine landscapes that dominate the Altiplano of Chile. The uniquely colored mountain lies 60km south of Visviri.
Suriplaza means “place of the suris”. The plaza is shaped like a natural amphitheater, surrounded by impressively colorful mountains that invite for small hikes and walks. The red color shades of the mountain stem from the great number of clayey elements in the region.
To get here, one can cross the Allane Canyon and travel long the feet of the volcano Taapaca at 5.250m above sea level. En route, you can spot guanacos, vicuñas and a variety of birds. Apart from the natural scenery, the road leads through picturesque small settlements. The colored mountain forms the last stop of the way, and here is the place where Chile begins!
